Tips for Creating Black and White Gallery Wall

Whether your gallery wall is painted neutral color, a black and white gallery wall will add a classic look to any space. After figuring out the gallery wall location for the gallery wall frame, I chose a combination of black, white and wood framing. Notice the mix of black and white frames in different sizes, and the black rug hanging on the blue plank wall is beautiful.

I opted for black and white to keep the walls and art neutral, and added color to the space with throw pillows, throws, rugs, books, plants, and small accessories. Although I did a number of gallery walls in different sizes and colors (such as our living room wall in our last home), I must say that I loved how easy it was to plan and hang as the artwork was all the same size and one color palette.

And you can almost mix prints in the order you want, since they are all line art. I chose these prints for my wall (1/2/3/4/5/6), but you can really choose any line art, black and white illustrations, or even black and white typographic quotes for your wall. For the gallery wall in the living room, I use frames of different sizes, styles and colors – all black, white, gold or wood.

A salon style wall can also use all frames in the same color or blend for a more eclectic feel. Some ideas for gallery walls are square block frames hanging from a grid, frames on a shelf, mixed and matched frames, or a tetris style similar to the gallery wall above. Another idea is to rock the black and white gallery wall, which allows the art to be swapped and stacked on top of each other for a more interesting look. Depending on each person’s style, the wall can be plain with a black and white photo or can be used to decorate a room with bright prints.

Choose bold stripes for your wall, then add the same frames and photos to give the room a dramatic look. This uses varying amounts of browns to bring the accents together and make the wall more interesting.
